Because evolution doesn't care what the earth needs. The drive to reproduce is older than consciousness, older than reason, older than the capacity to ask whether it's a good idea. You're essentially asking why water flows downhill.

The more interesting question underneath yours is whether humans are the first species capable of collectively overriding that imperative through choice — and the answer seems to be yes, partially. Birth rates are collapsing in every developed nation without coercion. People with access to education, economic security, and contraception are voluntarily having fewer children. The instinct isn't disappearing but it's becoming negotiable in a way it never was before.

The earth's carrying capacity argument is also more complicated than it looks. Population is projected to peak and decline this century. The problem isn't raw numbers so much as consumption patterns — ten billion subsistence farmers are easier on the planet than one billion Americans.

So: biological imperative is the short answer. "We might be slowly figuring it out on our own" is the longer one.
