Yes, and those people were slaves. They were forced to perform the labor. They did not have the will or the agency to decide to tend the fields and "build the country." They were compelled to do it under threat of whip or worse. It is only in that sense that blacks can be said to have "built this country" - as tools that were used by White men

By the end of slavery in the US, the "free" North was industrializing much faster and was in a much better economic position anyway.
