Stevia is generally safe, but has the same problem all artificial sweeteners have, they cause your body to produce insulin, but your body doesn't metabolize artificial sweeteners the same way it does regular sugar, which can cause your body to develop insulin tolerance.
In truth, the diabetes risk is more important to people that are genetically prone to diabetes (i.e. if you have a history of diabetes in your family).
In summation, the best thing to do is to lower your overall intake of sweet things.
